New Study Finds Chiropractic Care more effective than traditional medical care or physical therapy for Low Back Pain

A recent study published in the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine - March 14, 2011, showed Chiropractic to be more effective than traditional medical care or physical therapy for patients with low back pain.

What the study essentially found out was when patients with low back pain were tracked for a YEAR, patients that utilized physical therapy and/or medical interventions were associated with a higher recurrence of disability as opposed to patients that underwent Chiropractic care.
In fact, the patients were TWICE as likely to end up disabled with a physical therapist (PT) and almost 2/3rds more likely to be disabled when partaking in traditional medical interventions.

This study is unique in that it was conducted by the Center for Disability Research at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Hopkinton, Mass; and the Center for Health Economics & Science Policy at United BioSource Corporation, London, United Kingdom.
Their objective was to compare the occurrences of repeated disability episodes between types of health care providers, who treat claimants with new episodes of work-related low back pain (LBP). They followed 894 patients over 1-year, using workers’ compensation claims data.

By controlling for demographics and severity, they determined the hazard ratio (HR) for disability recurrence between 3 types of providers:

Physical Therapists (PT), Physicians (MD), and Chiropractors (DC).

The results are quite interesting:

For PTs: HR = 2.0
For MDs: HR = 1.6
For DCs: HR = 1.0

Statistically, this means you are twice as likely to end up disabled if you got your care from a PT, rather than from a DC.

You’re also 60% more likely to be disabled if you choose an MD to manage your care, rather than a DC.
The authors concluded: “In work-related nonspecific LBP, the use of health maintenance care provided by physical therapist or physician services was associated with a higher disability recurrence than with chiropractic services or no treatment.”

Iodine tablets: how iodine protects the thyroid from radiation

Iodine tablets: how iodine protects the thyroid from radiation

March 14, 2011, 1:50 p.m.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said over the weekend that Japan had “distributed 230,000 units of stable iodine to evacuation centres” near the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear power plants.

Damage to those plants from Friday’s earthquake and tsunami has increased the risk that people in the area could be exposed to radiation.

If that happens, here’s why taking iodine tablets might help.

In this fact sheet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explain that the body needs iodine — in a nonradioactive form — to make thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism.  People usually get the stable iodine they need from food.

But absorbing radioactive iodine-131, which is present in the steam released from failing power plants like the ones in Japan, can cause cancer.  Once breathed into the lungs or consumed by eating or drinking contaminated food or beverages, radioactive iodine travels through the body and quickly is absorbed by the thyroid gland, where it can damage DNA.

The body can’t tell the difference between stable and radioactive iodine.  Taking stable iodine tablets can protect the thyroid from injury by “filling up” the gland — thus preventing it from taking up radioactive iodine.  It’s important for people to take it quickly, the CDC said.  It remains effective for 24 hours.

Iodine tablets do not prevent radioactive iodine from entering the body in the first place, nor do they protect organs other than the thyroid gland.  They also do not reverse thyroid damage that has already occurred.

Prolamine Iodine help supports healthy thyroid function and is most beneficial when used as a short-term mechanism to boost serum iodine levels.

Chiropractic on the Dr. Oz Show!

Chiropractic on the Dr. Oz Show!

Chiropractic Doctor Steven Shoshany featured on Dr. Oz show where he performed a Chiropractic adjustment on a member of the audience.

Dr. Oz explained that 80% of people experiencing back pain could benefit from visiting a chiropractor and receiving a chiropractic adjustment to the spine.

On a large piece of equipment designed to represent the spine, Dr. Oz demonstrated how the spine getting out of alignment causes pressure on the discs and nerves, which in turn, causes pain. Dr. Oz said that even simple things such as sleeping wrong or getting groceries out of the car can force the spine out of alignment.

Dr. Oz explained that pain medications only mask the symptoms, but do not treat the underlying cause of back pain. He also said that a misaligned spine can result in a herniated disc which causes a lot of pain and takes quite a while to heal.

Dr. Oz had a chiropractor on today’s show who proceeded to give an audience member a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractors restore health by the manual realigning of joints, particularly the spine. After the adjustment was given, he explained to Dr. Oz that realignment of the spine reduces interference to the nervous system and lets the body heal itself.

The segment focused on the findings in a new Cochrane study which showed that Chiropractic manipulation was just as effective as effective for treating lower back pain as traditional treatment, such as pain medication.

At the South Bay Pain and Rehab Center, Drs. Quan and Dao Tran have over 18 years of combined experience providing Chiropractic treatment for the injured and Lifestyle Chiropractic care to help their patients achieve optimum health and maintain peak performance.

The 4 Essentials of Lifestyle FitNESS

With the rise in obesity and the concerns about health care reform, it is more important than ever that each individual and family make fitNESS a part of their lifestyle. The question for you is, will you wait for a crisis such as acute pain or a heart attack to make the changes, or will you make them because you want to live a better quality of life? These fitNESS tips will ensure that you have a well rounded plan that you can enjoy for a lifetime.

The 4 Essentials of Lifestyle FitNESS

There are four components to overall fitness. The last four letters of the word “fitness” form an acronym, Nutrition, Endurance, Strength and Structure.

Nutrition: Consume QC’s and not EC’s

Good nutrition is important for your body to be healthy. Both empty and excess calories, EC’s, will lead to sickness, low energy, obesity and chronic health problems. QC’s are quality calories. They come from live foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. QC’s are nutritionally satisfying because they contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and amino acids that are the building blocks of a healthy body. EC’s, empty calories, come from foods such as white sugar, white flour, and white rice, which add calories to your diet without nutritional value. Be conscious when you are eating and choose QC’s over EC’s.

Endurance

Endurance comes from cardiovascular exercise. Whether it is from walking, running, bike riding, the elliptical, basketball, tennis, soccer, or a rowing machine, this type of exercise is necessary for your heart to stay healthy. Get 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise at least 3 to 4 times per week. Wear a heart monitor and monitor your heart rate while you also count the number of calories you burn. As your stamina grows, increase your intensity to increase your results. Life is a marathon and not a sprint, and endurance training will give you the stamina to enjoy it.

Strength

Your level of strength will determine your ability to remain active and independent as you age. Through regular strength training with a personal trainer or on your own, you can build muscle and stand strong, no matter how many birthdays you celebrate. The saying, “if you don’t use it, you lose it” is definitely true when it comes to strength. Free weights, functional training machines, Pilates and Yoga are all examples of exercises that build your strength. Make strength training a part of your fitness plan today.

Structure

Hippocrates said, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.” Edison said, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” There is no way around it, you have got to take care of your spine and nervous system if you want to live an active, healthy long life.

Many people attempt a fitness program and find that their body breaks down during within a few weeks. They experience pain and injuries that become nagging to severe and it can stop them from reaching their goals. This is one indication that your spine may have underlying problems known as subluxations. Chiropractic examinations can reveal underlying problems in your spine that can keep you from getting in shape, and also lead to all types of health problems. Don’t wait until you “feel it” to get checked. You may be waiting too long and why spoil your momentum if you are working out to get in shape?

Make an appointment for a spinal exam, or ask us about our Lifestyle Fitness and Nutrition workshop that you can attend with your family and friends. They will give you the knowledge you need to improve your health dramatically.

Article from Westminster Lions

Fountain Valley, Ca (February 26, 2011)

The Vietnamese American Culture & Education Foundation (VACEF), a non-profit organization, in conjunction with the Little Saigon Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Army, where Attorney Hoang Huy Tu serves on the Federal U.S. Army Advisory Council, presented Free Law Day at The Tu Firm.

This event had been a long time in the making and its necessity was realized by Hoang Huy Tu who, during the course of his practice spanning over a decade as chief legal counsel of The Tu Firm, found that many members of this community were unable to afford quality legal services while others were simply unaware or misinformed of the various legal options that were available to them. These conditions are only compounded by the language and cultural barrier that exists between our young immigrant community and the legal system.

With Free Law Day, Attorney Hoang Tu aims to provide these members of the public with a means to obtain free quality legal advice so that they will be able to better deal with the various legal issues that may be facing them – whether it is criminal, immigration, bankruptcy, personal injury, family law, etc.
