May is National Correct Posture Month - Stand Taller for Posture Month

Stand taller for posture month

May 1, 2011 — May is National Correct Posture Month, and it seems mom was even right about standing up straight. Improving your posture is not just about looking good. Studies show people with better posture really are healthier and actually live longer.

From kids with backpacks or cane-carrying seniors — studies show poor posture is a major cause of back and neck pain for all ages, and over time often contributes to digestive and cardio-pulmonary problems.

Here’s three things to help keep you standing tall:

1. Take an annual posture picture to set the benchmark for your body. Ask a friend to take your picture from the front, back and side. Print them out, one to a sheet, and look at your body symmetry.
Just comparing posture pictures from year to year can be eye-opening. You can assess your alignment by putting a dot between your feet on the front and back view, and at your ankle on the side view. Then, fold each paper in half neatly at the dot.

Front and back view: The two halves of your body should be the same. If your head and/or torso is off to one side, or your arms are hanging differently, your posture is not symmetrical.

Side view: The line from your ankle should pass thru your shoulder and ear. If your head is way forward of that line, you may have a posture distortion called forward head posture (FHP).

File your posture picture and compare it to a new one next year.

2. Do posture strengthening exercises to maximize the benefit of any workout, or as a beginning exercise to get in shape. Yoga, Tai-Chi, and Pilates are all great for building body awareness and control.
Best posture stork: Train yourself to stand tall while building good posture by balancing on one foot.  First, stand tall with your best posture and then focus on staying tall and straight as you lift your thigh so your knee is at hip height.  Keep standing tall for 30 seconds on each side, focusing on keeping your body well aligned.
Vertical wall stand: Back up to a wall so your heels, buttocks, shoulders, and head all lightly touch the wall while you keep everything level, relaxed and aligned — and take three slow breaths, feeling your body’s best posture. Note: If you feel any areas of stress, get your posture checked by a professional.

3. Choose smart posture habits, Get a good chair, and change it’s position during the day. If you’re going to play videogames, exercise more than your thumbs with games with one that makes you move such as the motion sensing videogame consoles.

Invest in quality shoes, and consider using a shoe insert or orthotic, especially if you’ve had foot problems.

If you have back pain, neck soreness, or other posture problem — or want to find out how strengthening your posture can improve sports performance (ie golf, tennis, baseball) and wellness — help is available. Consult a chiropractor or health care professional trained to analyze posture and teach individualized posture exercise routines for pain management and wellness.

Your posture is how the world sees you, and a bit of effort at strengthening your posture is an anti-aging habit to make you look and feel better, avoid injury and exercise effectively to stay active and age well.

Located in the center of Vietnam, Hue is famous for its severe weather with boiling hot days in the summer and ceaseless raining weeks in the winter. Between 1802 and 1945, it was the imperial capital of the Nguyễn Dynasty. It is well known for its monuments and architecture. Its population stands at about 340,000 people. Hue people, therefore, have formed their own culture to overcome geographical and climatic difficulties. This culture, seen through food, characteristics, and other aspects in daily life, reflects the typical feature of Hue people. Hue is famous for various kinds of food. People remember Hue’s food because of the arts and the hidden meaning which each dish conveys. Another main feature of Huế dishes that sets them apart from other regional cuisines in Vietnam is the relatively small serving size with refined presentation, a vestige of its royal cuisine.

Jessica Alba visits a chiropractor with a friend before stopping at Joan’s on Third on Thursday (May 5) in West Hollywood.

While at the MET Ball in New York City, the 30-year-old pregnant actress shared about the difficulties of carrying a baby. “It’s a little tricky tonight,” she told In Touch. “I keep finding myself leaning forward.”
Her husband, Cash Warren, only had kind words about his pregnant wife. “She looks beautiful, unbelievable, gorgeous,” he gushed.

FYI: Jess is wearing a D&G floral dress and Stuart Weitzman “Strutting” platforms.

Research at a Glance - Treating Chronic Neck and Back Pain

Spinal manipulation may provide broader and more significant long-term benefit for chronic spinal pain patients than acupuncture and medication.

Muller R, Giles LGF. Long-Term Follow-Up of a Randomized Clinical Trial Assessing the Efficacy of Medication, Acupuncture, and Spinal Manipulation for Chronic Mechanical Spinal Pain Syndromes. J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2005;28(1):3-11.

BACKGROUND
Chronic mechanical back pain and neck pain, which are often caused by an injury or disease, present a diagnostic and treatment challenge and pose a significant financial strain on the health care system. Some evidence shows that a multidisciplinary team approach to treating spinal pain results in high patient satisfaction. The evidence about the superiority of a particular treatment for non-specific chronic spinal pain is inconclusive.

THE OBJECTIVE of this study was to assess the long-term effect of medication, needle acupuncture and spinal manipulation on treating patients with chronic (> 13 weeks) spinal pain.

THIS STUDY conducted a one-year follow-up of a randomized clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of medication (Celebrex, Vioxx and/or acetaminophen), acupuncture or high-velocity low-amplitude spinal manipulation on treating chronic spinal pain. Sixty-nine patients were randomized into three treatment groups, receiving one type of treatment for nine weeks. The one-year follow-up was conducted through Oswestry Back Pain Index, Neck Disability Index, Short-Form-36 and Visual Analog Scales. The study analyzed the results of treatment of 40 patients who had received only one randomly allocated type of treatment.

RESULTS
Comparison of the initial and long-term follow-up questionnaires produced the following results:

• Only the group receiving spinal manipulation showed long-term treatment benefit, with five of the original seven improvements remaining statistically significant after one year.

• Only one of seven improvements remained statistically significant in each of the acupuncture and the medication treatment groups at follow-up.

CONCLUSION
For treating chronic spinal pain, spinal manipulation, if not contraindicated, may provide broader and more significant long-term benefits than acupuncture or pain-relief medication.

Chiropractic Patients Return to Work Faster

In both the United States and Canada, back pain contributes to significant absenteeism and lost productivity in the workplace. In Alberta, Canada, alone, on-the-job back injuries account for more than 25 percent of all Workers’ Compensation Board lost-time claims.
A recent article in the Calgary Herald discussed how patients that receive chiropractic care return to work faster and at less cost than with other forms of treatment. In addition, for employers, increased use of chiropractic care can reduce premium costs for benefits and contribute to improved productivity.
Furthermore, cumulative performance statistics over the past decade from the Alberta Workers’ Compensation Board indicate that chiropractic care is the most consistent and cost-effective treatment per claim.

Free Help for Stranded Freeway Motorists in Los Angeles County – DIAL #399 from your mobile phone

Free Help for Stranded Freeway Motorists in Los Angeles County – DIAL #399 from your mobile phone

If you live in Southern California (specifically in LA) you know that freeway traffic is something we dread every work day.  We now have help to reduce slowed traffic due to stalled vehicles.

Thanks to Metro Freeway Service Patrol, a free service which helps reduce traffic by helping stranded vehicles.  Their services range from changing flat tires, refueling your empty tank (up to 1 gallon), jump starting dead batteries to towing vehicles off the freeway.

The next time you or someone you know are stranded on the freeway.  You’ll just need to dial #399 from your mobile phone…..for help.  You’ll be doing your part to help reduce LA Freeway traffic congestion ;)

Free Help for Stranded Freeway Motorists

Whether it’s a flat tire, an empty gas tank, or an overheated radiator, chances are that one day, you’ll need help on the freeway. Thanks to the Freeway Service Patrol, help is on the way!

The Metro Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) is a team of tow truck drivers patrolling freeways all over Los Angeles County to provide help to stranded motorists and assist in clearing traffic accidents to keep traffic moving.  This service is absolutely free of charge.
Metro FSP services include:
  • Changing flat tires
  • Jump-starting dead batteries
  • Refilling radiators and temporarily repairing leaking hoses
  • Providing a gallon of fuel
  • If the FSP cannot get a stranded car running within ten minutes, it will tow the vehicle to a safe location off the freeway.
To call an FSP truck, simply call free #399 from your mobile phone, or call for help from a freeway callbox.

The FSP tow trucks reduce traffic congestion by efficiently getting disabled cars running again or by quickly removing those cars from the freeway. FSP also greatly reduces the chances of further incidents caused by onlookers and impatient drivers. In addition, FSP helps save fuel and reduce air polluting emissions by reducing stop-and-go traffic.

The ultimate benefit of Metro Freeway Service Patrol is that the safety of the motorist is not compromised while the efficiency of our freeway infrastructure is maximized.

This program is funded by Proposition C, which passed in 1990 to fund transportation improvements and help reduce traffic congestion.
