Abstract

ABSTRACT:: Study Design.

A prospective single blinded placebo controlled study was conducted.Objective. to assess the effectiveness of spinal manipulation therapy (SMT) for the management of chronic non-specific low back pain (LBP) and to determine the effectiveness of maintenance SMT in long-term reduction of pain and disability levels associated with chronic low-back conditions after an initial phase of treatments.

Summary of background. SMT is a common treatment option for low back pain. Numerous clinical trials have attempted to evaluate its effectiveness for different subgroups of acute and chronic LBP but the efficacy of maintenance SMT in chronic non-specific LBP has not been studied.

Subjects and Methods. 60 patients with chronic, nonspecific LBP lasting at least 6 months were randomized to receive either

(1) 12 treatments of sham SMT over a one-month period,

(2) 12 treatments, consisting of SMT over a one-month period, but no treatments for the subsequent nine months, or

(3) 12 treatments over a one-month period, along with “maintenance spinal manipulation” every two weeks for the following nine months.

To determine any difference among therapies, we measured pain and disability scores, generic health status, and back-specific patient satisfaction at baseline and at 1-month, 4-month, 7-month and 10-month intervals.
Results: Patients in second and third groups experienced significantly lower pain and disability scores than first group at the end of 1-month period (P = 0.0027 and 0.0029 respectively).

However, only the third group that was given spinal manipulations during the follow-up period showed more improvement in pain and disability scores at the 10-month evaluation.

In the no maintained SMT group, however, the mean pain and disability scores returned back near to their pretreatment level.

Conclusion. SMT is effective for the treatment of chronic non specific LBP. To obtain long-term benefit, this study suggests maintenance spinal manipulations after the initial intensive manipulative therapy.

Back pain often ranks as one of the top reasons for employee absenteeism and "presenteeism" (being at work but not really doing any work!) costing companies millions of dollars.  Back pain afflicts approximately eight of every ten Americans during their lifetime.

Another recent study published in the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine - March 2011, showed Chiropractic to be more effective than traditional medical care as well as physical therapy for patients with low back pain.

Airport security scans: What would your doctor do?

By Elizabeth Cohen, Senior Medical CorrespondentMarch 31, 2011 11:23 a.m. EDT

The Transportation Safety Administraiton says full-body scans, which emit a small amount of radiation, are safe. The Transportation Safety Administraiton says full-body scans, which emit a small amount of radiation, are safe.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Seeing doctor decline airport full-body scan sparked correspondent’s curiosity
  • She asked other doctors randomly about whether they submit to “backscatter” scans
  • TSA says multiple studies have shown that scanners’ radiation levels are safe.
(CNN) — I was in the security line at an airport a few months ago when I watched a fellow passenger do something I’d never seen done before: He dissed the scan.

“I’d like to opt out,” he said, as a security agent went scurrying for a male agent to give this man a full-body pat-down, the requirement for anyone who refuses to go through the full-body scanner.

Wow, I thought, this man really must want to avoid the scanner if he’s willing to get groped by a total stranger.
The Transportation Security Administration says the so-called backscatter scans, which emit a small amount of radiation, are safe. “Multiple independent studies have confirmed that the technology used to protect passengers when they fly is safe for their health,” says TSA spokesman Nicholas Kimball. “TSA takes many precautions to regularly verify that all machines are operating properly.”

Another type of airport scanner uses “millimeter wave” technology, which uses electromagnetic waves and has not raised the same level of public concerns as the backscatter scans.

So why all the worry? In my obnoxious journalist way, I pounced on the guy to ask him why he’d done it.
“I’m a doctor at M.D. Anderson, and I don’t want radiation if I can avoid it,” he said.

I was next in line. I’d just watched a doctor at M.D. Anderson, a top cancer hospital, opt out because he wanted to avoid radiation. Does that mean I should, too? I had a second to make a decision. I decided to opt out, too.

Bill: TSA screening is sexual assault

2010: Pilots against body scanners

2010: To be scanned or patted down

2010: Skipping the body scan RELATED TOPICS
The pat-down, I learned, is not such an easy option. First, you have to make a bit of a spectacle of yourself by publicly asking for something different. Secondly, it takes time (not a lot, but enough to be a problem if you’re running late) and thirdly, I ended up being touched in places previously reserved for my husband and my gynecologist.

I began to wonder if the doctor was being a little paranoid. Was the radiation so dangerous that it was worth the hassle and embarrassment? To get a little perspective, when I returned home I randomly asked doctors I respect what they do in the security line. It was a completely unscientific sampling, but it yielded this interesting result: All these doctors are smart people with access to the same scientific data, and yet made very different choices.

Doctors who say “yes” to the scanners

I started, of course, with my colleague Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon, who told me he hasn’t opted out thus far.

Many other doctors feel the same way.

“I go through them,” said Dr. Greg Zorman, chief of neurosurgery at Memorial Healthcare System in Florida. “The amount of radiation you get isn’t worth worrying about.”

Dr. Drew Pinsky, an internist and host of a new show on HLN that makes its debut on April 4, called the amount of radiation “inconsequential.”

The radiation you get from a backscatter imaging machine used at many airports is the same amount of radiation you get from sitting on an airplane for two minutes, according to research released this week by the University of California San Francisco.

The researchers calculated for every 100 million passengers who fly seven one-way flights a year, six of them could get cancer as a result of the radiation exposure from the full-body scans.

The California researchers made these calculations based on information from the manufacturers. Some researchers question whether the manufacturers’ measurements are valid. David Brenner, director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University, says he thinks the exposure to radiation is actually 10 times more than what the manufacturers claim.

Even so, Brenner (who’s a physicist, not a medical doctor) still goes through the scanners at airports because even by his calculations the amount of radiation is still small.

Doctors who say “no” to the scanners
Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, takes a pat-down instead of going through a scanner when he travels. He says he’s concerned about whether the machines are calibrated and inspected properly.

USA Today did a piece on how badly TSA maintained their X-ray equipment for carryon bags, and this gave me little confidence,” he wrote to me in an e-mail.

Brawley’s deputy concurs.

“I do whatever I can to avoid the scanner,” Dr. Len Lichtenfeld wrote to me in an e-mail.

He says as a frequent flier, he’s concerned about the cumulative effect of the radiation.

“This is a total body scan — not a dental or chest X-ray,” he wrote to me. “Total body radiation is not something I find very comforting based on my medical knowledge.”

Lichtenfeld says it doesn’t necessarily give him great comfort that the TSA says the scans are safe.

“I can still remember getting my feet radiated as a child when I went to the shoe store and they had a machine which could see how my foot fit in the new shoes,” he says. “We were told then that they were safe, and they were not.”

(At first I thought Lichtenfeld was making this up, but you can actually see one of these foot scanners at the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices at the Science Museum of Minnesota.)
Another doctor who opts for the pat-down is Dr. Dong Kim, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ neurosurgeon.

“There is really no absolutely safe dose of radiation,” says Kim, chair of the department of neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical School. “Each exposure is additive, and there is no need to incur any extra radiation when there is an alternative.”

This was echoed by several other physicians, including Dr. Andrew Weil.

“All radiation exposure adds to the cumulative total you’ve received over your lifetime,” Weil wrote to me in an e-mail. “Cancer risks correlate with that number, so no dose of radiation is too small to matter.”

Doctors exposed to radiation at work are particularly sensitive to this issue, as I learned when I got through security that day in the airport and chased after the doctor who’d opted out.

I learned his name is Dr. Karl Bilimoria, and he’s a surgical oncology fellow at M.D. Anderson. He says this is a frequent topic of discussion among his colleagues.

“If we can avoid a little radiation in exchange for the two extra minutes needed for a pat-down, then we will,” he says.

Elbow Pain (Tennis Elbow, Golf Elbow) and Chiropractic

Elbow Pain (Tennis Elbow, Golf Elbow) and Chiropractic

By Mark Studin DC, FASBE (C), DAAPM, DAAMLP

Tennis elbow, golf elbow, shooter’s elbow “is a condition where the outer part of the elbow becomes sore and tender. It is commonly associated with playing tennis or other racquet sports, though the injury can happen to almost anybody. The condition is also known as lateral epicondylitis (“inflammation of the outside elbow bone”), a misnomer as histologic studies have shown no inflammatory process. Other descriptions for tennis elbow are lateral epicondylosis, lateral epicondylalgia, or simply lateral elbow pain…The peak incidence is between 30 and 60 years of age historically” (Wikipedia, 2010, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_elbow).

Symptoms include pain on the outer part of the elbow (lateral epicondyle), point tenderness over the lateral epicondyle – a prominent part of the bone on the outside of the elbow, gripping and movements of the wrist hurt, especially wrist extension and lifting movements, activities that use the muscles that extend the wrist (e.g. pouring a pitcher or gallon of milk, lifting with the palm down) are characteristically painful, and morning stiffness.1

In December of 2008, a research article reported on the effects of chiropractic cervical manipulation (adjustment) on the pain pressure threshold, or the minimal amount of pressure to cause pain, along with grip strength, or the amount of strength in the hand. The results of the research concluded that the application of a cervical spine adjustment produced an immediate bilateral (both sides) increase in pain pressure threshold (decreased pain) and an immediate pain free grip on the affected side.2

This is one of the reasons that both professional golf and tennis organizations maintain chiropractors at high profile events as it is reported that the scores of the players have improved with chiropractic care. However, this also explains why chiropractic has been helping in work and at home in everyday life with a similar diagnosis.

This study along with many others concludes that a drug-free approach of chiropractic care is one of the best solutions to elbow pain. To find a qualified doctor of chiropractic near you go to the US Chiropractic Directory at www.uschirodirectory.com and search your state.

Fukushima raised to level 7 Chernobyl event, Japan admits more radiation escaped than we were told

Fukushima
Tuesday, April 12, 2011
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com

(NaturalNews) The title of this article probably should have been "TOLD YA SO." After all the downplaying, all the denials, all the disinfo and deceptions by both the nuclear industry and the mainstream media, it finally emerges that the amount of radiation released by Fukushima was far, far higher than what we were told. How high? So high that the Fukushima catastrophe has now been raised from a level 5 event to a level 7 event on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (http://www-ns.iaea.org/tech-areas/e...). They just skipped right over level 6 because they know even a 6 would be laughable at this point.

A level 5 event is an "accident with wider consequences." A level 6 event is a "serious accident," and a level 7 event is a "major accident." If you really do the math, however, Fukushima should be a level 28 event because there are four reactors each at level seven (4x7 = 28). Chernobyl only had one reactor, and it stored far less fuel than any one of the Fukushima reactors.

The amount of released radiation required to quality for a level 7 event is "several tens of thousands of terabecquerels." For example, 50,000 terabecquerels.

How much radiation has already been released from Fukushima? 500,000 terabecquerels -- and that's just from iodine-131 and doesn't even count the other isotopes that are also being released (http://apnews.myway.com/article/201...). In other words -- and here's the real shocker -- the amount of radiation released from Fukushima is over TEN TIMES the amount needed to qualify for a level 7 event!

With the arrival of this new designation, Fukushima is now OFFICIALLY a Chernobyl-class event, and nuclear officials are now openly and publicly admitting that the total radiation release from Fukushima could soon exceed Chernobyl -- although they're desperately trying to claim it somehow won't, if only due to the power of their own imaginations.

Meanwhile, we're being treated to an ever-expanding lesson in the table of elements as yet more radioactive materials are being detected in the Fukushima releases. Today, strontium was found in the soils near Fukushima, adding to the impressive list of other elements that were blown into the environment by the explosions there: Plutonium, Iodine and Cesium. (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/slight-amo...)

If only Fukushima had blown gold out of its core, Japan might actually have a way to pay for all this, by the way. But sadly, the byproducts of nuclear fission are not the precious metals we would all wish for. Rather, they are the radioactive elements determined by the laws of physics -- the very same laws of physics that the nuclear industry once thought it had smugly conquered.

Murphy, that clever little bastard, seems to crop up everywhere these days.

Far worse than we were originally told

With this new designation of a level 7 event, the massive cover-up has melted down. Although Japan has tried desperately to withhold radiation data, shut off the gauges, explain away the extremely high sensor readings and assure everybody that it was only a "miniscule" amount of radiation being released into the environment, the sad but undeniable truth of the matter is that Fukushima is a global-scale nuclear disaster that's now unleashing radiation across the world that's showing up in our milk and food.

The excuse behind raising the event to level 7 right now instead of earlier is laughable but predictable: Authorities claim they just didn't know how to measure the radiation!

"Our preparations for how to measure (the radiation leakage) when such a tsunami and earthquake occurred were insufficient and, as a result, we were late in disseminating information internationally," said a senior official working for Prime Minister Naoto Kan. (http://www.cnbc.com/id/42542704)

In other words, the nuclear industry didn't know how to measure radiation, they claim, and even when they did figure out how to take measurements, they withheld the resulting data.

The clever disinfo campaign marches on. NISA is now saying that the radiation released into the atmosphere is only 10 percent of Chernobyl's release. But what they don't readily admit is that they're releasing massive quantities of radioactive water into the ocean, and that doesn't count as "atmosphere," you see.

They also don't want you to remember that Fukushima is engage in an ongoing release of radiation with absolutely no end in sight. It is only a matter of weeks, in other words, before Fukushima does exceed the total Chernobyl release levels.

How do we know that? For one, that same senior official quoted above also says the Japanese government is now telling TEPCO to "set target dates for when it would halt the radiation leakage as well as restore the cooling systems" (http://www.cnbc.com/id/42542704).

Set target dates? It's like being stuck in a bureaucratic nightmare. Let's all have a committee conference, and we'll put together an "actionable game plan" so that we can "accentuate our positive accomplishments" while we all "facilitate going forward with team players" and other such nonsense corporate speak that often flows from the mouths of business suit morons who have no idea what to do but somehow want to take credit for it.

If there's a target date to set for halting the radiation, it should be TODAY. If there's a target date to restore cooling to the spent fuel rods, it should be YESTERDAY. Does anyone really believe these are things to be slapped onto a calendar like your best friend's birthday?

Oh, and by the way, we're now supposed to believe the Japanese government is telling us the truth from here forward, I suppose. Sure, they lied about the radiation releases in the past. They downplayed the seriousness of the event; they withheld data and explained away the broken gauges as flukes. But now they're suddenly going to be up front with all of us and tell us the truth, you see. Now we're going to get honest and accurate information out of Japan, if you can believe that.

Still, nuclear industry shills can't help themselves from continuing to downplay the situation. "Judging from all the measurement data, it is quite under control," says Hironobu Unesaki, a nuclear physicist at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (http://apnews.myway.com/article/201...). He also said that raising Fukushima to a level 7 event was no cause for worry, and that "...it doesn't mean that a significant amount of release is now continuing."

It seems that Unesaki didn't receive the memo that says, "Stop lying to the public." He's still operating from the previous official memo which instructed everyone to, "Deny and Downplay."

Remember when Fukushima was only a level 4 event and all the nuclear industry experts and government experts were saying "this is nothing like Chernobyl?" Then it was raised to a level 5 event and they repeated, "It's still nothing like Chernobyl." And now with the official designation at level 7, they're screaming, "We swear! It's nothing like Chernobyl!"

Except that it is. It's a lot like Chernobyl. All the elements are the same, after all: The toxic iodine-131 and cesium-137 being released into the environment. The strange but persistent government cover-ups. The lying to the public. The downplaying of the human fatalities caused by the event. The outrageous ineptitude of the nuclear industry "experts" who told us these power plants were safe.

It sound almost exactly like Chernobyl, come to think of it. And if you read the news archives from 1986, you'll find extremely harsh words from the USA condemning the Ukranian officials for withholding data and downplaying the situation there. And yet, just 25 years later, the tables are turned. Now Japan and the USA are in full-on cover-up mode, playing the part of the Soviet officials who lied to their own people about the severity of the disaster.

If there's one thing we've all learned from history, it's that you can always count on your government to lie to you in times of trouble. At precisely the moment the People need honest, accurate information about the severity of a disaster or crisis, government leaders will take to the podium and calmly announce that everything is fine and people should take no precautions whatsoever. And then immediately after these speeches are given, they scurry off to their underground command bunkers.

Here's a video of Obama telling Americans there's no problem with the radioactive fallout from Fukushima. It's hilarious (in a sad sort of way): http://naturalnews.tv/v.asp?v=61EFA...

Do you have an Ostrich in your Family?

Do you have an Ostrich in your family?
www.southbaychiropractic.com LOGO
Have you ever seen a picture of an ostrich with its head buried in the sand? This is one of the funniest scenes in nature and is a great metaphor to describe individuals who have a crisis care mentality about their health. This means that they only take care of themselves when they get sick, diagnosed with a disease or are in excruciating pain. This is not a good idea.

If you want to live an active, healthy long life, it’s time to redefine crisis. Here are earlier signs that you or your loved ones are in crisis:
  1. You take over the counter drugs on a monthly basis
  2. You have taken prescription drugs consistently for more than three months
  3. You have altered your life due to a health concern
  4. You constantly try to pop your neck and back or are fidgety
  5. You cannot exercise
  6. You take medication to offset the side effects of other medications
  7. You experience irregular sleep patterns
  8. You are susceptible to colds and the flu
  9. You say things like, “I need to go to the doctor” or “I need to take a pill” often
  10. You have difficulty standing or sitting up straight
Many seniors and centenarians are suffering the consequences of their “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, ostrich-like attitudes. We’re getting the advance notice that our parents and grandparents never received.

These concepts will help you think differently about health and pull your head out of the sand:
CCA 100 Year Lifestyle Certification LOGO
Embrace your innate potential. Do you have a parent or great grandparent that lived to 80, 90 or 100 years old? Whether you like it or not, this is your innate, genetic potential. Your children and grandchildren share your genes as well, so become excited about your longevity and make the lifestyle changes now to ensure your health and vitality for a lifetime.

Remove interference. Your mind and body will break down when there is interference in your nervous system. Just like a car accident will interfere with the flow of traffic, interference to your in your nervous system will cause dis-ease in your body which can lead to pain, sickness and even chronic disease. Sometimes you will have symptoms and sometimes you won’t. Don’t wait for the symptoms, the crisis, to remove this interference. That’s what an ostrich would do. Stay healthy by keeping this interference out of your spine and your lifestyle, regardless of how you feel.

Build a Health Care Team.  Crisis care teams and health care team are different. While there may be some overlap, many people surround themselves with a crisis care team only and they never look to maximize their innate, genetic potential. Can you imagine waking up well rested, feeling great, with lots of energy and making the most of every day because your mind and your body were functioning at their highest level?  This is what your health care team and Lifestyle Care will help you achieve.

We are excited to be a part of that team for you and your family. We would be honored to help you and your family get their head out of the sand.  If you have an ostrich in your life, please have them call our office for an appointment with Dr. Tran today!
